Letter signed from Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, the Court at St. James, to Mr. Richard Bagot, Esq., Staffordshire [manuscript], 1588 September 21.

Requests Bagot, as a commissioner, to make a secret survey of the Cannock forest and ironworks, and to prevent any wrong, disgrace, or damage from being laid upon his cousin Greville and himself. Autograph postscript from Essex: "It doth much trouble me that so indirect a course is taken to preiudice my Cosin Greuill and to disgrace myself. Besides I am the more mened in yt because my L. Tresorer doth refuse the knowledg of this commission."

Frederick of Mömpelgard (d. 1608) became the Duke of Württemberg in 1593. Robert, Earl of Essex (1586-1601) was a favorite of Elizabeth I, Queen of England, and occupied a variety of military posts.
